No doubt the best example of the architectural splendour of the Second Empire, the Garnier Opera is one of the largest old opera houses (11,000 square meters). |

Situated to Beaubourg in the 4th district, the Centre Pompidou contains the National Museum of Modern Art. Of the level 0 ( the Forum) at the level 6 (the temporary exhibitions(exposures), the panoramic restaurant), the spaces of the Centre are occasions of meetings with the arts of the 20th century. Pipes hung on the facade provoked a scandal when the centre Pompidou opened the first time in 1977. Of the last floor, we can see the roofs of the Parisian buildings.

The churches of St-Eustache and St-Germain l'Auxerrois held the first Parisian marketplace, dating from the beginning of the 12th century. In 1183, Philippe Auguste enlarged the marketplace and built a shelter for the merchants, who came from all over to sell their wares. For centuries, until the marketplace was moved to Rungis, The Halles were the "stomach of Paris". The liveliness once associated with the area has disappeared, even if the new modern shopping mall, the Forum des Halles, still attracts a large number of people. |
